OK. First and foremost, I want to say that I think that the MoveOn.org advertisement attacking General Betraeus was totally the wrong way to go. While I may agree with some of the sentiments in the ad - I hate bad stistics - but attacking a man who has given his life to this nation seems to go a bit far.
Gen. Petraeus went to West Point. He was a graduate of the class of 1974, my father was class of '75 and he knew the General. If any of you know this fine school, you would know that honor means EVERYTHING to the core of cadets. When they are tearing these young people down so they can build new officers, they instill in them this sense of honor. Duty, Honor, Country. Those are the words they live by and the words they try to die by. To say that the man is a traitor to his nation is the most awful thing a person can say to him.
Yes, the statistics used, totally suck. But they are what they are. We know what they are too. We know how they are getting them, so its no big secret. Gen. Petraeus was given the shitty job of fixing the massive Bush/Cheney/Rummy blunders of Iraq. He has been given the task of figuring out the most expedient end of this debacle without creating a power vacuum by forcing a premature withdrawal. How about we give him a chance to do his job?
I do understand that we have all been mislead before. General Powell sat before us telling us about WMD's 5 years ago. Was he lying? I don't think Gen. Powell was lying either, He was reading a report that was erroneously cooked.
Republicans and neocons also need to back off. People are not unpatriotic for not believing the General. Unfortunately, Bush has destroyed the credibility for any of the leadership involved with Iraq. Bush has even managed to trash the credibility of the military, in general. How do you expect any of us to believe PEtraeus when we know what happened the last time???

I went to University of Virginia, famous for its Honor System. Anyone violating the honor code is subject to dismissal from The University. While I was in school, I'd say about 98% of the students there valued and adhered to the honor code, and if all I had to go by was school history, I'd trust a UVA grad over someone from another school. But if given the chance, I'd be looking into their record and history to determine their trustworthiness. Petraeus has been around for a long time - let his past actions speak for his character, not his diploma.
